Water based wood finishes can be clear finishes or contain stain colours in them. Two or three coats are generally applied to build a surface film. The products here are suitable for interior wood trim, furniture and panelling. For floors and benchtops see "Floor Finishes"
Water based finishes are often more suitable than oils on highly absorbent timbers such as pine, plywood or cork, or where a fast drying finish that can be applied with a brush, roller, or spray is desired. Water based clears will not deepen the colour of timber like oils do so may be more suitable where a lighter or less rich colour is desired.
The stain coloured finishes add a little more colour with each coat and can produce vibrant colours, whereas oil stains transfer most of their colour in the first coat and produce more muted colours. However waterbased stains can show overlap marks so need to be applied very evenly.
All timber is unique and the effect of a finish will depending on the porosity, density, degree of sanding, and initial colour of the timber. Hence testing a few sample products on your timber is the best plan if you are after a particular look. All of our products are available in sample pots for this reason.
